Just steps away from the historic Galata Tower lays a hidden gem of Istanbul’s live music scene, Nardis Jazz Club. Well-known to locals, but less frequented by the casual visitor, Nardis puts on a lively interactive display of jazz performances throughout the week without the pretentiousness of larger more expensive venues. Nardis is a relatively small, comfortably chic club with warm brick walls, a well stocked bar serving wine, beer, hard liquor, soft drinks, and a nice selection of bar food with seating on the lower and upper levels. I joined two friends to see Turkish jazz singer Melis Sökmen perform on a Saturday night. We sat at a reserved table on the lower level near the door, but despite the constant foot traffic of smokers headed outside for relief, this did not interrupt our enjoyment of Sökmen’s show. Sökmen took to the stage at 11 PM and did not stop until 2:30 am. Despite the signs on each table asking guests not to talk during the performance, guests danced to Latin-inspired jazz numbers and passionately sang along to a melody of Stevie Wonder covers and Turkish classics. Throughout the show, the club owners warmly greeted regulars, toasted newcomers, and took photos of the proceedings. Towards the end of the evening, I felt as though I were at a good friend’s house party rather than a public music venue. Nardis should be a stop on any music-lover’s tour of Istanbul.
